During the winter Sappada is
covered with a cloak of pure white which makes it particularly pretty
as well as pleasing to the many who come here to ski.
There
are over 20km of skiing and snowboard pistes for all abilities, from
children and beginner slopes to the more difficult runs. Throughout the
village there are many chair lifts and draglifts. All the pistes are
easy to reach from the village and for those in possession of a Ski
Pass, there is a free ski bus with connects all the various slopes,
with convenient drop off points.
It should be remembered that Sappada is the birthplace and training ground of several such athletes, Silvio Fauner and Pietro Piller Cottrer of the Camosci
Cross Country Skiing team. Maurilio De Zolt from a local village nearby
who is an Olympic medallist. In snowboarding the brothers Filippo and
Giacomo Kratter who were placed 4th in the last Olympic games held in
Salt Lake City USA, are also from Sappada. But there is not only
skiing. There are 3 natural ice rinks located in different parts of the
village and numerous pistes dedicated to those who wish to ride a bob
or a sledge on the snow.
But there is not
only skiing. There are 3 natural ice rinks located in different parts
of the village and the Nevelandia park, dedicated to the fun on the snow with sledge and snow tubing.
There is also the possibility to hire motorised snow bikes for practice or for longer rides, and the presence of frozen ice falls attracts many climbers.
Alongside these facilities there
are several services provided by the local Ski Schools (scuola sci), such as lessons
and hire of equipment. There are also events such as the Ski Show
and the Carnival which is celebrated in style.
